A Thomson Reuters procura candidatos para a posição de Jornalista Correspondente na África Ocidental, com localização baseada em Dakar.

Description
The Dakar bureau is seeking a motivated and resourceful correspondent to be part of the small team covering West and Central Africa, perhaps the continent’s most colourful and turbulent region. The successful candidate will have fluent French and be a talented all-round reporter, able to switch from covering coups in Central African Republic and the West’s fight against Islamists in the lawless Sahara to writing cotton production figures from Burkina Faso and cocoa reports from Ivory Coast. The job requires willingness to travel at short notice around the region plus the patience and perseverance to deal with obstructive authorities and erratic communications. The role also involves a significant amount of time spent editing stringer copy from around the region.

West Africa, home to many of the world’s poorest nations, remains prone to military coups, rebellions and famine. A rising Islamist threat has dragged France into a war against Al Qaeda in Mali, where its troops are likely to remain for the foreseeable future alongside a U.N. peacekeeping mission. The vast, empty desert is also home to one of the main trafficking routes for cocaine into Europe and the fight against drugs traffickers in the region is also a major story theme, particularly in the tiny narco-state of Guinea-Bissau where senior military brass were arrested this year in a U.S. sting. The region is also of increasing interest to investors because of rising oil production and giant mining projects in countries from Liberia and Guinea to chaotic Democratic Republic of Congo. With the gradual disengagement of traditional power France, emerging giants such as China and South Africa are staking their claims for influence in the region.
