A famosa cadeia de televisão BBC está a recrutar um ‘Pronunciation Linguist’, sendo o português uma das línguas solicitadas.

Job Introduction

The BBC Pronunciation Research Unit provides advice on the pronunciation of names, words and phrases in any language required by anybody in the BBC. The Unit is staffed by Pronunciation Linguists who carry out research and communicate advice to broadcasters. The Pronunciation Research Unit is part of BBC Information & Archives. We are recruiting for a Linguist (phonetician/phonologist) to join our team based in London.

Role Responsibility

The role of a Pronunciation Linguist is to carry out linguistic research and deliver advice on pronunciation in all languages to BBC programme makers, ensuring that pronunciations in BBC broadcasts are accurate and anglicised/standardised in a consistent manner. You will receive and manage requests for advice, assessing users’ needs, prioritising work and carrying out rigorous research, in line with established practices. In addition to promoting the service across the BBC to raise awareness/visibility and maximise usage, you will also establish and maintain good working relationships with specialists in the field of Phonetics/Linguistics, language professionals and pronunciation specialists at other global broadcasters. You will also regularly update and maintain the Unit’s pronunciation database and website.

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this role, you will have studied Phonetics/Phonology, preferably to postgraduate level, and have a practical and detailed knowledge of the IPA and its application in phonemic and phonetic transcription of all languages (not just English). You will have excellent written and spoken English and near-native fluency in at least one language besides English. German, Latin, Arabic or Portuguese would be of particular interest but not essential. Applications from suitable candidates with near-native fluency in languages other than those stated above are also welcome. You will have strong research and IT skills. With experience of working in a strongly customer-focused environment, you will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate appropriately at all levels. In addition, you will have an excellent eye for detail, possess strong planning and prioritising experience, be able to meet the needs of users and work under pressure to tight deadlines. Key competencies include a good team-working ethic and sound editorial judgement.
